Job Success Series: Top Non-Job-Specific Skills that Employers Want (Skill 1 of 5)
When your experience isn’t an exact match for a job, how can you put your best foot forward on your resume – or in an interview?
Sell your transferable skills!
Transferable skills are those non-job-specific skills that you carry from position to position. And while the requirements for each job are unique, employers typically look for these skills when hiring, because they are indicative of success in most any type of work.
So, just what are the top transferable skills that will make you attractive to a hiring manager? Today, PrideStaff starts a 5-part series of posts, each highlighting a non-job-specific skill that employers want most.
Skill 1: Self-Confidence / Assertiveness
Whether you’re a receptionist, a production line supervisor, a collections specialist or an HR assistant, you need to be confident in your abilities and sure of yourself (without being cocky). Today’s hiring managers are looking for candidates who:
- Are able to professionally and directly communicate what they want, need and feel.
- Trust their own abilities enough to perform their jobs without constant micromanagement.
- Feel comfortable delegating work, when necessary.
- Are able to receive and implement constructive feedback from superiors, without becoming defensive or ashamed.
- Can represent a company with integrity and efficiently resolve client/customer/vendor issues without placing blame or becoming emotional.
How can you demonstrate greater self-confidence during your next job interview?
- Prepare and practice. Nothing boosts your confidence more than knowing the company, the requirements of the position, and the reasons you’re the best candidate for the job.
- Watch your posture. Sit up straight, control nervous habits and try not to fidget.
- Maintain appropriate eye contact. Too little conveys disinterest; too much conveys aggression.
- Use “I” statements, such as: “I prefer” and “I do not like.” Assertive people “own” their opinions, beliefs and feelings, unapologetically.
