Using the Right Subject Line in a Follow-up Email

Sitting at your keyboard, ready to draft that all-important follow-up email?

Struggling to find just the right words?

Wondering if you should you be witty?  Direct?  Verbose?  Something else?

Well, nothing you write in the body of your email will matter – unless you create a subject line that compels your reader to open it.  In fact, the right email subject line can grab attention, put you top-of-mind with a hiring manager, and ultimately help you land the job you want.

No pressure there, right?

Don’t worry; PrideStaff can help.  Today, we’re offering up some of our best tips for creating irresistible email subject lines:

Think before typing.
The subject line is one of the most important parts of your email (especially when it’s unsolicited).  Put as much effort into this part of the email as the body.

Front-load the good stuff.
If you have anything promising or appealing to say, allude to it in the subject line.  Most people only scan their inbox; positive words stand out.  The words “Thank You” are always a smart choice, but you should incorporate other positive terms when appropriate.

Be short and specific.
A subject line that’s too vague or long may not be read, so include the essentials in an attention-grabbing way.  If you’re following-up on a recent administrative assistant interview, you might consider something like, “Administrative Interview – What’s the Next Step?”

Drop names the right way.
When you’re on the job hunt, connections can make all the difference.  If you have a mutual professional acquaintance, use it to your advantage.  Including a familiar person’s name can greatly increase the chances that the reader will open your email.  For example, if you’re following-up on a resume submission, try something like, “New Finance Job Opportunity Jim Smith Mentioned.”

Almost any recruiting manager who is worth following up with will undoubtedly be inundated by a daily barrage of emails.  Use these quick email tips to make sure it gets noticed, gets read and gets the response you want.
