Is Your Major Marketable? Most Popular College Degrees and Jobs for Them

 

Why do most people earn college degrees?

To learn essential knowledge and skills that make them more employable, of course! Unfortunately, the degrees which make graduates most attractive to employers are a bit of a moving target.

What should you study? What jobs could you land with your degree? Today, PrideStaff takes a look at the top college degrees (and corresponding jobs) from a 2014 National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) study. NACE went straight to top employers at 260 companies and organizations, to find out what bachelor’s degrees they want most:

  • Finance. What can you do with a bachelor’s degree in finance? Common careers include actuary, budget analyst, financial planner/advisor and insurance underwriter.
     
  • Accounting. Earned your bachelor’s degree in accounting? Employers are hiring for entry-level jobs such as staff accountants and junior auditors.
     
  • Computer Science. If you hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science, consider seeking employment as a computer software or hardware engineer, a computer application developer or a computer programmer.
     
  • Mechanical Engineering. Earning your degree in mechanical engineering? You’ll have diverse career opportunities to choose from, including jobs in product development, product testing, systems design, plan engineering and utilities.
     
  • Business Administration/Management. A business major can find employment in a variety of sectors, from retail and education to government and private business. Some of the jobs you may be qualified for include bookkeeper, accounts payable professional, budget analyst, facilities coordinator and human resources manager.
     
  • Electrical Engineering. The job opportunities for an individual with an electrical engineering degree are as diverse as the devices they work with and include: project engineers, test engineers, design engineers, broadcast engineers and network engineers.
     
  • Information Sciences and Systems. Common careers for graduates include data science engineer, database administrator, computer support specialist and librarian.
     
  • Marketing. If you have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, you’ll have a wide range of career opportunities. Jobs for graduates include marketing assistant, sales representative, marketing coordinator and marketing specialist.
     
  • Logistics / Supply Chain. Popular career options for degree-holders include transportation management, purchasing and materials management, supply chain management and logistics analysis.
     
  • Management Information Systems. Graduates with a degree in information technology management can find opportunities as information systems managers, software applications developers, IT project managers, computer systems engineers and network systems administrators.
