Tips for Turning a Temp-to-Hire Position into a Long-Term Career
Considering a career change but can’t get your foot in the door? Wish you could get the inside scoop on what it’s really like to work for a company before committing yourself for a long period of time? Want a low-risk way of trying something new?
A temp-to-hire role might be the answer for you.
What’s the Difference Between Temporary and Temp-To-Hire Work?
In a temporary job, you are employed by a staffing firm and accept short- or long-term assignments. The agency handles your paychecks and benefits, and when your assignment ends, they’ll find other work options for you.
In a temp-to-hire job, your assignment is considered a trial period, giving you and the company time to see if the role is a good fit. If you perform well and add to the company culture, then the company might offer to hire you directly. If you choose to accept, then you become the company’s employee and are no longer employed by the staffing firm.
What Are The Benefits of Temp-To Hire?
Even when you ask all the right questions before accepting an offer, it’s impossible to know if the job is perfect for you. Taking a temp-to-hire position allows you the see if you enjoy the job, the work environment, and your colleagues before committing to a permanent role.
If you don’t fall in love with your first assignment, you’ll have made valuable contacts, added experience to your resume, and gained exposure in your area of interest.
How To Land a Direct Offer
When you accept a temp-to-hire role, each new opportunity has the potential to be your dream job. Consider these tips for turning a temp-to-hire position into your permanent career:
Treat your temp-to-perm job like a permanent position. If you act as though you’ll only be with the company for a short time, there’s a good chance that will be true. Instead, perform like you are already a reliable member of the team. While on the job, try to:
- Be on time—or early
- Show enthusiasm for your tasks
- Complete every task to the best of your ability
- Follow the dress code
- Learn about the company
Be a team player. Get to know your colleagues and make a positive contribution to the workplace. Volunteer to help when needed (as long as your own responsibilities are under control). Going the extra mile for a co-worker can help build valuable workplace connections that can pay off later.
Take initiative. If you have extra time on your hands after completing your duties, ask if you can take on a special project or help a co-worker. Asking for growth opportunities shows you have a passion for the work and may help secure a direct hire offer.
Express interest in continuing your role. It’s not a good idea to ask if you will be offered a permanent position before you’ve proved you’ll do an exceptional job. However, toward the end of your assignment, let your recruiter know you’re open to the possibility of direct hire. They will be able to advocate on your behalf with the employer.
If you have the opportunity for a final employee review with your direct supervisor, be sure to express interest in staying with the company and mention your accomplishments during your time with the team.
