How to Escape a Toxic Work Environment
A horrible boss, lousy culture, antagonistic co-workers… Toxic workplaces can take a mental and physical toll, causing the following:
- Sleeplessness
- Low self-esteem
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and depression
- Relationship issues
- Appetite changes
If your well-being is suffering, and you are considering leaving your job, consider these tips for putting toxicity behind you and embracing a more positive workplace:
- Make a list. Changing jobs is a big decision with far-reaching consequences. It’s doubtful you would decide to do it without giving it serious reflection. Take the time to make a pro and con list identifying the reasons you might stay in your role and why you want to leave. If the negative outweighs the positive, move on to step two.
- Figure out what comes next. For most, this involves finding another job before quitting. To avoid landing in another toxic situation, take another look at your con list. As you begin looking for another position, stay alert to cultural similarities. We often gravitate to what we find familiar—but you need to make a change. Update your resume and cover letter with your relevant experience, awards, and recognitions, and start the search.
- Create an exit strategy. Once you’ve decided what comes next (and maybe even found another role), it’s time to let your employer know you will be leaving. Giving two weeks’ notice is customary. Your employer will have time to replace you, and you will display your professionalism.
- Leave on a positive note. Although it may be tempting to start dishing all the reasons you’re leaving, it’s better to remain positive when talking to your boss and co-workers. After all, you’re leaving because you want to escape the toxic stew. Why add to it on your way out the door? Plus, staying positive is a good idea for the following reasons:
- You’ll be able to gather recommendations from those at the company who think highly of you.
- You may need to use your current employer as a reference. Leave them with a great last impression.
- You never know when you might run into current managers or co-workers in future jobs. You don’t want to become known for your bad attitude.
