Hey, New Guy – Open Up a Little!
You may be highly qualified to handle the responsibilities of your new position.
But performing job duties correctly is only part of your success as a new hire.
During the first days and weeks, you must also get to know your fellow employees and adapt to the culture. However, if you’re not one of those people who’s naturally skilled at breaking the ice and fitting in, being “the new guy” can fill you with anxiety.
Our advice? Open up a little! Use these tips to relax, make friends and gel with your new work team:
Expect to feel a little nervous.
If you’re a little overwhelmed, accept that it’s a natural – and temporary – part of starting a new job. By simply acknowledging this fact, you’ll handle the stress a bit better. Once you drop your shoulders, you’ll feel more like yourself and be prepared to build work friendships.
Take charge.
If you aren’t formally introduced to the people you will be working with, take the initiative. Approach your new coworkers, greet them with a smile and handshake, and learn their names. Like you, they may be a bit apprehensive. Being proactive ensures you’ll get off to a friendly start.
Talk less; listen more.
Human nature being what it is, your new coworkers will be sizing you up during your first days. Instead of regurgitating your resume to everyone you meet or boasting about your accomplishment, put the focus on them. Ask them about their responsibilities, their favorite parts about working for the company, or other neutral topics that will help you get to know them better. By demonstrating that you’re interested in your coworkers – and not trying too hard to shine a spotlight on yourself – you’ll set the right tone for building workplace relationships.
Bring food to share.
It may not be a ground-breaking idea, but it’s still a good one. People bond over eating experiences. Bringing in a snack or treat to share is a small gesture that creates goodwill and demonstrates your desire to fit in. Just don’t make too big a deal about it. Otherwise, it’ll seem like you’re trying to buy your coworkers’ friendship.
Thank those who help you.
During your first days and weeks, you’ll likely have lots of questions and need extra assistance. Show sincere appreciation to everyone who lends a hand to get you off to a successful start.
Offer your help.
You may be the new guy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be helpful. Do little things that make your teammates and boss look good. Find out what you can do to make your coworkers more successful in their jobs. If you make their work easier, they’ll be more likely to return the favor.
