The Art of the Follow-Up: How to Stay Memorable After the Interview

Following up after an interview helps the hiring manager remember you. Sending a well-written email within 24 hours of the discussion leaves a lasting impression.
Staying memorable strengthens your impact on the hiring manager. Being top-of-mind increases the likelihood of advancing in the hiring process. The following strategies can help.
Prioritize Interview Follow-Up
Ask the hiring manager about their decision timeline when the interview ends. Expressing your interest in the role helps set reasonable expectations for a decision. Then, you can schedule your follow-up emails for the day after the interview, the day after the decision deadline, and two to three weeks later.
Write a Thank-You Email
Send a thank-you note to each interviewer within 24 hours of the discussion:
- Express appreciation for the interviewer’s time
- Restate three main points shared during the interview
- Emphasize your three biggest role qualifications
- Include any additional information relevant to the role or discussion
- Demonstrate interest in the role
- State that you look forward to hearing back soon
Thank-you email example:
Hello, Ms. Berriman. Thank you for taking the time to talk with me about the Sales Manager role. I enjoyed meeting with you and your team yesterday.
I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the company and help establish a foundation in the company’s newest sales region. I am especially excited about the upcoming projects you mentioned and the opportunity to leverage my industry connections and B2B sales experience in this new territory.
After talking with you and your team, I understand that my background and experience make me uniquely qualified to fill this role. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can produce references, work samples or other materials to help your decision-making process.
Thank you for considering me. I look forward to your response.

Check in with the Hiring Manager
Email the hiring manager a follow-up message the day after the decision deadline if you have not heard anything:
- Remind the hiring manager you still are interested in the role
- Mention the timeframe the hiring manager set during the interview
- Restate your desire to hear the hiring decision when it is available
- Encourage the hiring manager to connect with you for additional information
Check-in email example:

Request to Stay in Touch
Wait two to three weeks to send the hiring manager an email asking to keep the lines of communication open:
- Restate your gratitude for the hiring manager’s time
- Mention something you like about the company
- Ask the hiring manager to keep you in mind for another role that fits your knowledge, skills, and experience
Request to stay in touch email example:

I appreciate the opportunity to talk with you and your team. I am intrigued by your professional path, especially since you successfully transitioned from another field. Because I intend to follow a similar trajectory, I would like to learn more about how you have advanced your skills, made strong connections, and added value in the field.
I would like to schedule a follow-up conversation when you are available. Do you have time for a short call later this month?
